Background of the Study
Indigenous agricultural practices have sustained communities in Ondo East Local Government, Ondo State, for generations, relying on traditional knowledge and organic methods to cultivate crops. These practices are deeply embedded in cultural traditions and environmental stewardship. In recent years, modern farming techniques, including mechanization, chemical fertilizers, and advanced irrigation systems, have been introduced to improve productivity and meet increasing food demands (Adebayo, 2023). This technological shift, while offering economic benefits, poses challenges to indigenous practices by altering land use patterns and diminishing reliance on ancestral methods. Recent studies highlight a growing tension between modern agricultural practices and traditional farming techniques (Olowookere, 2024). This study investigates the effects of modern farming on indigenous agricultural systems, examining productivity, environmental impact, and cultural implications (Fashola, 2025). Progress persists.

Statement of the Problem
Modern farming techniques are increasingly replacing indigenous agricultural practices in Ondo East Local Government, leading to significant changes in traditional crop cultivation methods. The adoption of mechanized and chemical-based farming has resulted in environmental degradation and a decline in traditional knowledge (Adebayo, 2023). This shift raises concerns about food security, sustainability, and the loss of cultural heritage associated with indigenous agriculture (Olowookere, 2024). The challenges posed by modern techniques require urgent attention to balance productivity gains with environmental and cultural preservation (Fashola, 2025). Balanced integration of systems is essential for sustainable agricultural development.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the impact of modern farming techniques on indigenous agricultural practices.

  2. To evaluate the environmental and cultural implications of modern agriculture.

  3. To propose integrative strategies for sustainable farming.

Research Questions:

  1. How do modern farming techniques affect traditional agricultural practices?

  2. What are the environmental and cultural impacts of these changes?

  3. How can modern and indigenous farming methods be effectively integrated?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Modern farming techniques significantly alter indigenous agricultural practices.

  2. The environmental impact of modern methods adversely affects traditional farming.

  3. Integrative strategies can enhance sustainability and cultural preservation in agriculture.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the effect of modern farming techniques on indigenous agricultural practices, offering insights into environmental sustainability and cultural preservation. The research informs policymakers, farmers, and development agencies on balancing modern innovations with traditional methods (Adebayo, 2023). Ultimately, the findings contribute to sustainable agricultural practices and support efforts to maintain indigenous knowledge and environmental integrity.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to investigating the effect of modern farming techniques on indigenous agricultural practices in Ondo East Local Government, Ondo State. It focuses on productivity, environmental impact, and cultural aspects, excluding other regions.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Modern Farming Techniques: Advanced agricultural methods involving mechanization and chemical inputs.

  2. Indigenous Agricultural Practices: Traditional farming methods based on ancestral knowledge.

  3. Sustainability: The ability to maintain agricultural productivity without depleting natural resources.
